The world gives us plenty of reasons to despair. The Hopium Dispatch is a reason to pause. These are dispatches about life, beauty, courage, books, culture, memory, gratitude, and the small things that remind us we are still human.
Honest words from a woman who notices things, and still believes the bright side is worth looking for.
The price of a cup of tea. A quieter corner of the internet.

A seat is waiting
If you have followed my writing for any length of time, you know I am always looking beneath the obvious. I write about the world's day to day and my own. I write about what makes me stop, what makes me laugh, what breaks my heart, and what puts it back together.
The Hopium Dispatch is where I step away from the shouting and write from somewhere quieter. There may be a cup of tea beside me, a cat in my lap, a bird singing nearby, and a thought I cannot leave alone until I have put it into words.
This is our break. This is our bright side.

Beauty hiding in ordinary days. A handwritten page. Candlelight. The courage it takes to notice, and then to say what you noticed out loud.

About the writer
Maureen Steele is a nationally published author, prolific writer, legal analyst and researcher, mother, grandmother, and lifelong observer of human nature. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, where she writes about culture, family, freedom, injustice, resilience, and the strange, beautiful experience of being alive.
She is the cofounder of the American-Made Foundation and Once Upon Your Voice, which creates custom children's stories paired with the recorded voice of someone a child loves, preserving not only the story, but the sound of the person telling it. She is also the owner of Kin and Country Publishing, an independent publishing house devoted to meaningful books, enduring ideas, and stories worth carrying forward.
The Hopium Dispatch is Maureen’s most personal writing home....a place for essays that begin in the heart, wander through the mind, and end somewhere honest. She believes words matter because they shape what we notice, what we carry, and what we choose to pass on.
Maureen does not pretend that cruelty, brokenness, or darkness do not exist. She has seen enough of life to know that they do. But she also believes that beneath the noise, most human hearts are good....and that this world remains a breathtakingly beautiful place. The good exists, too. The Hopium Dispatch is where she chooses to look for it, name it, and remind the rest of us not to miss it.
